Word Of Mouth is No Accident
“TRIGGERS” AND WORD OF MOUTH
How often has every marketer heard from a company: ” I have only grown my business from word-of-mouth, I do not need to advertise.” For every business that grew from word-of-mouth, ten others have failed.
It is simple, if a company wants people to talk about them and spread the word, then they need to create “triggers” to get people talking. On average we have about 17 word-of-mouth moments a day, whether it is recommending a restaurant or talking about a commercial (Jonah Berger). I have doubt those conversations are by chance!
CREATING THE RIGHT “TRIGGERS”
- Create a multi-channel approach (traditional media, digital marketing, content creation)
- Keep the message simple
- Make the consumer look good if they share your company
- Be consistent
- Don’t mistake social media virality for person-to-person word of mouth
